A window or a door blind provides privacy for the insiders of that room by blinding the inside view to the people those who are outside, which is why it's called a blind. Blinds are also used for blocking the sunlight. But you cannot consider it as a suitable alternative to curtains because curtains are way more functional than blinds. There are theories of people for choosing blind over curtain or vice-versa. But I personally think that the choice really depends upon an individual's liking, need and requirement. Cost and maintenance also influences the choice. Blinds are certainly expensive than curtains and requires day to day maintenance i.e. cleaning & dusting. Where as curtains can be used at a stretch for 15 days or a month without washing.

Types of blinds

  • Venetian blind - also known as the horizontal blind have slats which are horizontally aligned and can be moved to & from, up & down direction.

  • Vertical blind - in this blind the slats are vertically placed sie by side and can be moved from left & right direction.

  • Mini blind - you can consider this as a smaller and narrower version of horizontal blind which fits into the frame of a window.

  • Roller blind - this blind is made from stiff material which is rolled onto a roller which sits at the top and can be lowered as you wish. You can lower it either fully or partially. Once you release, it goes back at the top.

  • Roman blind - this blind is made of fabric and not stiff material. The blind folds up from bottom into pleats.

Types of material used for blinds are bamboo, wood, faux wood, aluminium, vinyl, fabric, PVC and sheer fabric which is made using thin thread or low density of knit which results in a semi-transparent and flimsy cloth.
